Boosting a Building’s Bottom Line Through Green Renovation

Have you ever wondered if green renovation could improve the bottom line of your commercial building? Are you confused over what incentives are available? Do you wonder what the potential pitfalls could be? How soon can you expect a return on your investment?

SRM undertook a case study to answer those questions, using a structure that houses both white and blue collar businesses. Looking at everything from solar panels, to window upgrades, to heating systems, they studied the gamut of improvements that offered potential return on investment, in terms of both energy savings and increased leasability. They also dug into the many potential tax credits, rebates, and incentive programs available for green renovation and studied how they would impact the project’s bottom line.

In this workshop, SRM and their team of consultants and energy experts will present what worked for this building, what didn’t, and why. They’ll also discuss navigating the complex world of tax incentives and credits available to building owners. SRM is located in a former warehouse in the CEID, and they have a deep understanding of the unique needs of businesses located in these types of buildings.

Please join us for this informative event!

Burnside Bridge to close fro Rose Festival Parade

The Burnside Bridge will close to motor vehicle and river traffic on Saturday, June 6 from 7:00 am to 2:00 pm for the Portland Rose Festival’s Grand Floral Parade. TriMet bus lines 12, 19 and 20 will be detoured across the Steel Bridge while the Burnside Bridge is closed. Alternate routes when the Burnside Bridge is closed include the Morrison, Hawthorne and Broadway bridges.

The Rose Festival fleet makes its annual return to Portland’s downtown seawall this week. The fleet includes vessels from the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard and the Canadian Navy. Vessels will arrive on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons before the evening commute. The fleet will dock between the Steel and Morrison bridges. Ships are scheduled to depart on Monday, June 8, before and after the morning commute.

Several downtown drawbridges will need to open for ship arrivals and departures. Drawbridges that will open include the Broadway, Steel and Burnside. Motorists can avoid delays by using bridges south of the Burnside Bridge.

Portland’s Bicycle Master Plan needs your comments

Portland’s first Bicycle Master Plan was adopted in 1996. According to Ellen Vanderslice, Project Manager for the Portland Bureau of Transportation, the Bicycle Master Plan is now being updated to position Portland for the growth in bicycling they expect over the next twenty years, and to make Portland a world-class bicycling city.

In their outreach to the community, PBOT learned that narrow bicycle lanes on busy arterial streets are not enough to attract average Portlanders to ride a bicycle for transportation. They’re now proposing to expand Portland’s bicycle network, implement new designs, and revise the City’s bicycle policies, with the aim of creating conditions that allow people to feel as safe and comfortable riding bicycles for their daily needs as they do today when they hop in their cars.

During the first half of May, the project team held six open houses around the city in conjunction with the Streetcar System Plan to collect public input on the draft Bicycle Master Plan.

If you have concerns or comments – let ‘em know!
The project team will be accepting comments through Monday, June 15. To view to open house boards, to comment on the proposed facility maps, or for more information, please visit their site or email them at bicyclemasterplan@pdxtrans.org.

One key element of the updated plan will be implementation. Project staff is working together with the Mayor’s Office and stakeholders to identify new funding strategies for bicycle infrastructure.

A hearing on the plan is scheduled for the Planning Commission on August 25th. The plan is tentatively scheduled to go before City Council on October 21, 2009.

Can you help? ONI and Officers need space!

With the loss of the Southeast Precinct, the Office of Neighborhood Involvement and the Officers that patrol our district are looking for some space to rent.

They don’t need much space. Their presence and involvement in the district is incredibly beneficial to the businesses here, and with them being in your building, you add another level of security to it.

They are willing to pay rent (but hey, this is ONI we’re talking about – please keep it reasonable!) and promise to be fantastic tenants. If you have space available for them, please contact Havilah Ferschweiler at 503-823-0540 or hferschweiler@ci.portlland.or.us

Crime Prevention strategies for your business

With the summer months upon us, homelessness on the rise and the fact more and more people are in and around the district, it is more important to ensure you do all you can to protect your business.

The Office of Neighborhood Involvement has created a brochure on strategies you can implement TODAY to protect your business, your employees and your clients. Whether your business is open to the public or not, you should check out these tips now. Just doing one or two of these could result in a substantial savings for your business.

Central Eastside Transportation Plan

You may not know it, but there is a group of individuals meeting on a regular basis to determine how the transportation issues should be addressed in the Eastside district.

Portland Bureau of Transportation Freight Planning Coordinator, Robert Hiller has been spearheading the project to figure out how businesses, commuters, tourists, pedestrians and just about anyone else who comes through the district, should all get along as the district grows over the next 25 years.

You can see some of the ideas and recommendations created so far by downloading solutions-tech-memo-5-26-09

How a $10 golf ball could win you $1,000

Whether you golf or not, all people are equal when it comes to our Golf Ball Drop.

In order to raise funds for the hiring of a patrol company to police the district and help eliminate the camping problems, we will be raffling off golf balls for $10 each. After the CEIC Golf Tournament (which will be held at Langdon Farms on July 28th- details can be found here) a helicopter will drop 1,000 golf balls on a green.

If your ball goes in the hole, or is closest to the pin, you win $1,000! What could be easier? Besides the chance to win some cash, you’ll be helping us raise funds for something we know we all need in the area – a patrol company.

Purchase your golf balls now!
Simply email us at ceic@ceic.cc or give us a call at 503.768.4299. Remember, the more golf balls you buy, the better your chances of winning $1,000. Tell your coworkers, family members, your next door neighbors and vendors. Our goal is to sell 1,000 golf balls – how many do you want?
