Homeless feeds to remain under Burnside Bridge until June 1

At the request of Commissioner Nick Fish, the food ministries which feed the homeless three times a week under the Burnside Bridge, will continue in their location until June 1.

Because of the new Mercy Corps and University of Oregon buildings being constructed at this location, a new place for the feeds needs to be found. One site which was mentioned was the Festival Blocks underneath SE section of the Hawthorne Bridge.

The CEIC is educating Commissioner Fish’s office that this location would cause additional homeless people in the area, and would be difficult for many of the people to get to this location, since most of them already are on the westside.

The CEIC, along with a variety of stake holders attended a meeting with Commissioner Fish, on April 24th. There, each of the ministries said they prefer that a new site be found on the west side so as to reduce the impact on the people they feed.

The Commissioner’s office is reviewing a number of locations and will soon make their suggestions.

Stay tuned for more information on where the new feeds will be located.

Wanna win $1,000 AND bring security to the District?

Whether you golf or not, you can still come out a winner at the CEIC 13th Annual Golf Tournament sponsored by West Coast Bank. Simply buy a golf ball (or purchase a bunch of golf balls).

Here’s how it’ll work: We’re selling 1,000 sequentially numbered golf balls for a measly price of ten bucks a piece ($10 per ball.) After the tournament is over, a helicopter will be dropping one thousand (yes 1,000!) numbered golf balls on to a green. The ball that is closest to the pin or drops in the hole becomes the winner.

We will then use the proceeds to pay the winner $1,000, and the remaining amount will be used to help fund a security firm to assist in patrolling the district. What an easy way to help add security to your area and have the chance to win $1,000.

Obviously the more golf balls you buy, the higher chance you have at winning, so pull out that credit card now to purchase your winning golf balls. Just contact us at ceic@ceic.cc or by phone at 503.768.4299 to reserve your numbered golf balls.

This is open to EVERYONE so don’t let your lack of golfing hold you back – however since there are only 1,000, you’d better act fast before they’re all gone. The odds have never been more in your favor to win $1,000!

Portland-Milwaukie Light Rail Project reaches milestone

The light rail project officially received approval from the Federal Transit Administration to enter Preliminary Engineering (PE) on March 30, 2009. PE approval means TriMet can bring the project design from 10 percent to 30 percent, and that costs related to the design work will be paid for by the project.

Over the course of the next year, TriMet will advance the design of the alignment and station areas, while Metro will draft the Final Environmental Impact Statement.

You can now be notified about meetings specific to the part of the alignment that interests you. Sign up at www.trimet.org/pm.

According to Tr-Met, construction of the light rail line is slated to begin in 2011. The 7.3-mile line connects downtown Portland to Milwaukie and north Clackamas County, and they say it will reduce vehicle miles traveled by as much as 69,000 miles per day region wide. Their studies indicate more than 22,000 households and 85,000 employees will be within walking distance of a station when it opens in 2015.
