If you’ve been in Portland any amount of time, you’ve no doubt seen some of the iconic neon signs that make up the city’s businesses. The rotating loaf of bread above the Franz building, Miller Paint, Goodwill Industries and numerous financial institution signage were all created by a CEIC business member.
Now it’s time to see how this company produces these signs. Attend our next ‘Get To Know Your Neighbor Tour’ which will be held at Security Signs – 2424 SE Holgate on Thursday, May 21st starting at 1:00. You’ll see how skilled craftsmen create these award-winning signs.
To reserve your spot, send an email to ceic@ceic.cc or call us at 503.768.4299. This great networking opportunity is sure to open your eyes to how some of the most famous signs are created. Reserve your spot today!
While additional funding is being sought for, properties in the Portland Streetcar Loop service from the Broadway bridge eastside to OMSI, will be assessed a Local Improvement District (LID) tax.
Assessment will be established upon completion of the project (currently scheduled for 2011). Current assessment is based upon market value of Fiscal Year 2006 and is estimated to be $7.51 per one thousand dollar market value for properties within approximately one block of a Streetcar Street.
To see if this will impact your business and for more information on how the LID will be assessed, checkout the lid-distribution-packet-rev-5-23.

A group of PSU students, working on a project with the CEIC on what to do with vacant spaces in the CEID, are beginning to generate some interest with a variety of businesses, agencies and even the Mayor’s office.
No Vacancy! looks for ways that open land and buildings can be used on a temporary basis and works to match them up with individuals who are looking for temporary space.
At their recent networking event, artists, sculptures, real estate agents, business owners and property owners came together to match wants with needs and discuss possible opportunities.
Pollyanne Brirge, Arts and Culture Coordinator with the Mayor’s office is also interested in the project. By working with artists and people with open spaces in the CEID, her program might be able to generate additional funding for the Arts and Culture.
The students have also been asked by PDC to help them with ideas of what to do with the Burnside Bridgehead in the interim before the land is developed.
Tyler Graf of the Daily Journal of Commerce wrote an article on this which you can read here.
On Friday, April 24th, Commissioner Fish brought together the CEIC, the three ministries which currently feed the homeless under the west end of the Burnside Bridge, and a person from just about every other city agency, to discuss where the ministries can continue to feed the homeless.
A little background: For over a decade, Manna Ministries has been feeding the homeless under the Burnside Bridge. Bridgetown Ministries and New Song Ministries also have been feeding the homeless there, allowing people a hot meal on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays.
Due to the new Mercy Corps and University of Oregon buildings, the feeds will no longer be Continue reading ‘Homeless Feeds in the CEID?’
Last Monday, the Historical Panel appointed by the Commissioner of Transportation, voted two to one that Grand Avenue is ‘of historical significance to the city of Portland’.
The CEIC and Cathy Galbraith, Executive Director, Bosco-Milligan Foundation, attended the public forum to educate the panel on the historical significance of Grand Avenue and it appears to have had an impact on them.
Fifth Avenue was renamed to Grand Ave in 1893 when the city of East Portland was annexed into Portland. In 1994, the City Council adopted the East Portland/Grand Ave Historical District aimed at protecting the architectural heritage of the area.
In addition to Grand Ave., Broadway was also deemed of historical significance. This means the Historical Panel will only recommend 39th Ave as a viable candidate to be changed to recognize Cesar Chavez.

Peter Rossing, President of Hawthorne BDA and owner of Muse Art and Design reported receipt of a fake $100 bill recently.
The bill was so well duplicated that it took 3 people at the bank to verify it was a fake. They have been floating around town for the past couple of weeks.
The giveaway that it was fake was blotchy numbers and text on the back side of the bill. The front of the bill is very convincing. So, be careful out there and don’t accept any $100 bills unless you’re absolutely sure they are real!
