How CEID businesses can help reduce homelessness

JOIN is local non-profit that supports the efforts of homeless people to return to permanent housing.

JOIN has a long history of working with homeless “campers” in CEIC and throughout the Portland area. The organization provides a daytime drop-in center with an array of basic services, as well as a street outreach team that last year helped over 500 people who had been sleeping on our sidewalks or in their vehicles return to permanent housing.

Each individual and family that returns to permanent housing receives ongoing support to ensure that they do not return to the streets. CEIC members can support JOIN’s work in a variety of ways. JOIN has a supported employment program for homeless and formerly homeless people and is always looking for new employer partners. JOIN has numerous volunteer and giving programs, including a holiday food-box program and a Home for the Holidays initiative that combines sponsoring a family into housing and collecting the household items they will need to turn their new apartment into a home.

On a day-to-day basis, JOIN’s outreach workers endeavor to help improve the relationships between businesses, residents, and their homeless neighbors. If there is a way that you believe JOIN can help you in this regard, you should feel free to contact them. For more information, visit www.joinpdx.com or contact JOIN’s Director, Marc Jolin, at 503-232-7052 ex. 109.

Goodbye Graffiti, YEI, Day Laborers clean up District

On October 18th, Marcia Dennis the Graffiti Abatement Coordinator worked with a few volunteers along with Goodbye Graffiti and YEI to help eliminate unsightly graffiti tags.

YEI did paint outs, while Goodbye Graffiti did several pressure wash jobs, including some dumpsters.

In addition to the contractors, 4 people volunteered from the Day Labor Center and they worked on properties “in the right of way: like newspaper boxes, sign poles, etc.

Some of the addresses cleaned:

79 SE Taylor
105 SE Taylor
102 SE Alder
109 SE Alder
125 SE Stark
207 SE Clay
215 SE Stark
227 SE Oak
402 SE MLK
933 SE 3rd
201-211 SE Oak

Thank you to all that helped reduce the graffiti in the district.

As a reminder, if your property is vandalized, here are some important things you can do to help the police in getting these ‘taggers’ caught.

Record it – Take photos of the graffiti: Digital photos are extremely helpful for the police who will match the tags with graffiti reports from around the city to try and match as much as possible other property damage. Send photos to Marcia Dennis, Graffiti Abatement Coordinator at mdennis at ci.portland.or.us.

Report it – File a police report: Call 503.823.4824 or fill out a form online (website address below) to have your report filed and on record. The more times this is done, the easier it is to prosecute taggers. The report needs to have the location, date, photo, dollar amount of damage and contact information.

Remove it – Remove graffiti within 10 days: Visit Portland’s Graffiti information website where you can file a report, learn more about how to prevent graffiti and to get information on companies that remove graffiti including no-cost options.

We know you have better things to do than to file graffiti reports, but for now this is the best way to get those taggers arrested and off the streets.

Hawthorne Bridge Closure

Release: October 23, 2008

Contact: Michael Pullen, Public Affairs Office, 503-988-6804

Hawthorne Bridge to close Sunday for maintenance

The Hawthorne Bridge will be closed to road and sidewalk traffic on Sunday, October 26 from 7:00 am until as late as 5:00 pm so that electrical controls for bridge openings can be upgraded. Motor vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists will not be allowed on the bridge, which will be in the raised position much of the day. The bridge lift span will remain open for river traffic to pass. The work is not weather-dependent.

Alternate river crossings include the Burnside, Morrison, Marquam and Ross Island bridges. TriMet bus lines that normally cross the Hawthorne Bridge will be rerouted across the Morrison Bridge during the closure.

The Hawthorne Bridge, which opened in 1910, is the oldest working vertical lift bridge in the country. Multnomah County maintains the Hawthorne Bridge and more than 300 miles of roads and bridges.

10-week trial period with PPI a success, but what now?

To help protect employees and property in the district, the CEIC Board of Directors agreed to hiring a private security firm to patrol the district for a 10-week trial period. On August 25th, Portland Patrol Inc (PPI) began patrolling the area starting at the Esplanade and working their way throughout the district.

Utilizing two officers on bikes, they encouraged trespass campers to remove their possessions and campsites, met with local businesses and provided added security to the area.

For years, trespass campers have been causing property damage, defecating in doorways and harassing employees of businesses in the CEID. One owner recently had their back ramp burned down by trespass campers.

The situation has escalated over the past year as these individuals began to travel and congregate in large numbers. Their disregard for property and their threatening of business employees resulted in thousands of dollars in damage and lost work time. The issue was brought to the forefront when both KEX 1190 and KPTV Channel 12 reported on it. (You can hear both stories on this site.)

Because the police department has only limited man-power to tackle this growing problem, Central Eastside businesses had to search for alternative answers to displace Continue reading ‘10-week trial period with PPI a success, but what now?’
